Best American Anime List

When we talk about “American Anime,” the first question is: How can an anime be American when anime refers to animation made in Japan?

Well, here’s the thing: some animated shows, whether they’re cartoons or intended for adults, take inspiration from the anime style. Japanese anime studios create others. That’s where the term “American Anime” comes into play.

There are quite a few American animated series that fall into this category. As anime gains immense popularity worldwide, more and more American shows are teaming up with Japanese anime studios or Japanese creators. This collaboration adds a touch of anime to their stories.

What do we call American Anime?

No matter how good they become, American anime will always be seen as cartoons.

The word “anime” describes a special kind of animation from Japan. It’s all about the style of Japanese movies and TV shows. So, officially, animations from America won’t be called anime.

But here’s the interesting part: American animated shows are doing well. Some look like Japanese anime because of how they’re drawn, but most are trying to be unique.

This brings up the question of what we should call American anime. Now that we’ve discussed that, let’s dive into our list of the 15 best American anime shows.

Which was the first American produced anime?

The history of anime in America began in 1961, when Toei Animation’s Magic Boy and The Tale of the White Serpent became the first and second anime films to receive verified releases in the country. Anime has since found popularity in the region, with Astro Boy frequently cited as the first anime to enjoy extensive transmission, particularly in the United States. Furthermore, the rise in popularity of anime in the United States throughout the 1990s, known popularly as the “anime boom,” is attributed with much of anime’s ongoing relevance in popular culture outside of Japan.

Look no further! This article will take you through the world of American anime. We’ve put together a list that includes everything from action-packed dramas to heartwarming adventures. Let’s get started!

If you were a kid during the last 15 years (or parents, for that matter), you just had a chance to watch Ben 10.

The show is based on Ben Tennyson, a young child who discovers a watch-like gadget in the middle of the night, allowing him to change into various animals. Batman: The Animated Series

No. of seasons: 3

No. of episodes: 109

Genre: Action-adventure, Crime, Pulp noir, Superhero

Batman is the most well-known comic book hero of the DC universe, possibly the most well-known hero in all of. He has inspired numerous cartoons, and also films and TV shows. Of all these however, there’s one that has a lot of the elements that you would expect from anime which is Batman: The Animated Series.

It’s a Batman cartoon that is distinctive due to the style of art. Although the latest versions of Batman (like Batman: The Brave and the Bold) are more serious about them than the standard cartoons, they’re quite soft and don’t depict Batman as the Dark Knight nearly as dark as this one does.

The dark tones and the tense background create a rough and gritty vibe that isn’t typically associated with cartoons but anime. If you don’t like Batman: The Animated Series or the other Batman series, you can always check out Ninja Batman, which is actually regarded as an anime (if you’re inclined to have any respect toward Batman and his character, don’t watch the film).

Ultimate Spider-Man

No. of seasons: 4

No. of episodes: 104

Genre: Superhero, Action, Comedy drama

Even though Iron Man is the god of the MCU Your Spider-Man from your neighborhood is the star of the Marvel comic book scene. Marvel generally follows more of a lighthearted and humorous style of storytelling, which is more appropriate for kids.

Spider-Man’s age as a teenager makes him a better fit to adolescents and children more than an adult audience. However, Ultimate Spider-Man is nothing to shrug off.

First time that I saw Ultimate Spider-Man, it was an entertaining show that had great fight scenes as well as good characters. This was while I was in high school. My last time that I saw it was during college. I was awed by the smoothness of animation for a cartoon that was made in 2012.

The animation style and art style and the fact the source material was the comic book it reminded me of anime, especially the sharper edges and the finer lines. Although the show got mixed critiques by critics, it is a must-watch for anyone who is an avid fan of Marvel and anime.

Teen Titans

No. of seasons: 5

No. of episodes: 65

Genre: Superhero

As I reflect on it, most American cartoons feature superheroes as their primary theme. Making a team of adorable but powerful characters and letting them fight it out against villains who, for whatever reason, seek to destroy the world is an obvious plot device. Yet, somehow, it manages to keep viewers entertained.

Given that it is part of considering it’s part of the DC Universe, Teen Titans has its moments of serious and dark moments. With a great mix of characters and humor, it’s no surprise that the show caught the attention of many youngsters in 2003 when it premiered first on Cartoon Network.

After re-watching a few series as a grown-up, the show’s quality level stands over other shows that deal with the same genre of superheroes.

Invincible

No. of seasons: 1

No. of episodes: 9

Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama, Science fantasy, Superhero

Remember my previous comment about the number of superhero cartoons? Here’s another; however, this isn’t the standard “I’m not like other cartoons” kind of show. Invincibility demonstrates that these “heroes” are abnormal and can kill people. It’s a refreshing thing to watch.

Invincible opens with a child who, despite being the kid to be the strongest individual in the world, can never seem to master his abilities. Once he finally achieves it, he realizes that becoming a superhero is not as simple or cool as he believed.

This summary may not seem like much, but towards the end of the initial episode, we are given an idea of what it will likely be in (Spoiler Alert). The main character’s father brutally kills some of the most famous superheroes in the world. Why? Well, you’ll need to see and discover.
